Enterprise-Ready Workspace Search and Management for Slack

View on GitHub Built on open-source work by Dmitrii Korotovskii

Challenge

Slack workspace data was siloed from the rest of the team’s tools, and existing integrations required elevated permissions that IT teams wouldn’t approve. Enterprise organizations needed Slack connectivity but couldn’t justify the broad permission scopes that traditional integrations demanded.

The permission requirements created a stalemate: teams wanted the data, but security and compliance teams could not sign off on the access levels required to get it.

Solution

84EM built an integration with multiple access modes including one that requires zero additional permissions. Teams can search messages, read channels, and manage user groups with messaging disabled by default as a safety measure.

This approach directly addressed the enterprise adoption blocker: instead of requesting broad permissions that IT would reject, the integration works within existing access levels. Teams start with read-only access and expand capabilities as needed.

Key Capabilities

  • Zero-permission access that works without any additional grants, removing the biggest barrier for enterprise and regulated environments.
  • Safety-first messaging with outbound messages disabled by default, preventing unintended posts while still providing full workspace visibility.
  • Cross-channel search and history with date, user, and content filters for finding specific conversations and retrieving thread context efficiently.
  • User group management for organizing team subgroups without navigating Slack’s admin interface.

Results

The zero-permission access mode unlocked Slack connectivity for organizations that had previously rejected integrations due to permission scope requirements. Teams in regulated environments, including those using enterprise-tier Slack, could adopt the integration without additional IT approvals.

With messaging disabled by default, teams gained read access to their Slack workspace without the risk that had previously made stakeholders hesitant. Search and channel history provided the context teams needed without requiring broad write permissions.
